There is a dire need for restoration and rejuvenation of water bodies that are either drying up or are in a dilapidated state. In fact, the National Green Tribunal or NGT has highlighted the need to save water bodies on a war footing. One warrior of such a cause is Kalpana Ramesh. An architect by profession, Kalpana has been striving to restore the shrinking or dying water bodies such as lakes, wells, borewells, etc. She calls herself a water warrior and is fighting against the concretization and falling groundwater tables in the city. As a part of the Blue Hyderabad Campaign, Kalpana has been pushing water conservation in residential apartments, corporate offices, office blocks to make sure every drop of water is used judiciously.
Along with Rain Water Project and SAHE, Kalpana is totally committed to well restoration and lake rejuvenation. She has also initiated 5k and 10k runs to sensitize people. While 5k runs end at wells, 10k runs take one around lakes and wells in need of restoration, so people get the first-hand experience of the need. Such runs also help in fund-raising. Kalpana also has a slogan for her cause – Let’s run for water before we run out of it.
Those who cannot participate in person can do so digitally and they are given a rain harvesting bouquet for their participation. As a part of her campaign, the initiative has been taken up in the heart of the city in Hi-tec city with the support of local communities, government agencies, NGOs, educational institutions, corporate groups, etc. After demonstrating processes and showing results, Rainwater Project and SAHE intend to reach out to all basins in the city and make the city water positive.
