Consumption of beers declined in the city in recent times. Tipplers are reluctant to drink beer and the consumption has not increased despite a slight reduction in previously inflated beer prices. Officials also say many people are reluctant to drink beer because they have a wrong notion that drinking chilled drinks can spread Corona.
In Greater Hyderabad, officials estimate that daily sales have dropped from about 15 lakh cases to 13 lakh cases. Beer sales are always high irrespective of the seasons. People are preferring other alcohol brands over beer. The price of beers was raised by Rs 30 after the lockdown last year.
The sales plummeted after that and the government was forced to reduce the price by Rs 10 per beer. Prices of various beers fell from Rs 210 to Rs 200 and from Rs 170 to Rs 160. The government expected the sales to grow after that but that did not happen. The sales did not increase significantly. The price of beer is still higher than a quarter of liquor and so, tipplers feel it better to drink liquor than beer. So, the officials say a significant price cut may only increase the sales.
